Description for B&B:
The renowned King of France, Saint Louis, embarked on the task of reclaiming Aquitaine, a region of his kingdom which had been under English rule for several centuries. In 1638, the Lord of Mouillepied, known as the "seneschal," was obliged to pay homage to the Count of Taillebourg.During the 18th century, Château Mouillepied underwent expansion by Guillaume Clairins des Lauriers, a knight of Saint Michel and chief engineer of the Rochefort Arsenal. This transformation resulted in the creation of a stunning classical residence, complete with terraced gardens, picturesque ponds, and beautiful stone walls.
The name "Mouillepied" derives from the abundance of springs found on the property. Situated just two kilometers away from the charming and historic village of Taillebourg, renowned for the famous Battle of Taillebourg in 1242, immortalized by Delacroix in 1837.
In present times, Château Mouillepied serves as a guest house, bed and breakfast, offering a range of accommodation options, including self-catering and a three-star hotel. The owners warmly welcome guests to this 15th and 18th-century architectural gem, meticulously restored to preserve its authentic character. Located in the heart of the Romanic Saintonge region, it provides modern comfort amidst the tranquil countryside, conveniently situated only 30km from Cognac and the Atlantic beaches of Royan and Ile d'Oleron.
The château is conveniently located just 7km from Saintes, on the left bank of the Charente River, accessible via exit 35 of the A10 motorway from Paris to Bordeaux (110km) and the A837 from La Rochelle airport (65km). The spacious and comfortable bedrooms overlook the park and come equipped with ensuite bathrooms or shower rooms, toilets, and a range of amenities.
Guests can relax in the public lounges on the ground floor of the elegant stone mansion, which features a cozy fireplace. The orangerie offers a picturesque view of the peaceful and wooded Charente landscape. Complimentary tea, herbal tea, coffee, and soft drinks are available in the evenings. The château provides a wealth of information on local tourism activities, including fishing, rentals, walking trails, and visits to vineyards.
Within the park, there are two self-catering accommodations available, both equipped with central heating. Numerous restaurants are conveniently located in close proximity to the château.
