Directions
To get to the Inn from North Conway Village, turn east onto Kearsarge Street at the traffic light on Rt. 16. Continue for 1.5 miles until you reach a stop sign. Cross the intersection and take Mt. Surprise Road uphill, bearing left, until you reach the Inn.
From Boston, take I-95 North to Portsmouth, NH. Then, take Spaulding Tpk. North until it ends. From there, take Rt. 16 to North Conway. Alternatively, you can take Rt. 93N to Exit 23 (Rt 104E), then take Rt. 25E to Rt. 16N to North Conway.
If you want to bypass the Shopping District, you can use the new North-South Road that connects Kearsarge Street with Route 302. Follow the above directions from North Conway Village or follow the instructions below.
For MapQuest, make sure to input the address: 64 Mt. Surprise Road, Bartlett, NH 03838. The GPS coordinates are 44°04'38.39"N, 71°07'10.07"W, with an elevation of 700.
From New York City, take the NY thruway North (Major Deegan) to Rt. 287 East, then take 684 North to I-84 East. Next, take I-90 (MA Tpk.) East to Rt. 290 North (Exit 10). Continue on 290 North to I-495 to I-95, and then follow the directions from Boston.
From Portland, Maine, travel west on Route 302 to North Conway. Then, follow the directions to bypass the Shopping District or the directions from North Conway Village.
From Montreal, travel east to Sherbrooke, then head south on I-91. Continue following the directions below.
From the Northwest, take I-91 South to St. Johnsbury, VT. Then, take I-93 South to Littleton, NH. Travel east on Rt. 302 through Crawford Notch. Route 302 will merge with Rt. 16 from the North in Glen. Keep going south on Route 302/16. After approximately 3.3 miles, you'll see a highway sign for "The Buttonwood Inn - Hurricane Mt. Road". Take the second left, then go 0.3 miles. Turn left onto Hurricane Mt. Road, and continue for 1.2 miles. Turn left onto Mt. Surprise Road. You'll see a black highway sign for The Buttonwood Inn pointing left. Bear left, and the road will turn to dirt. You'll see our sign straight ahead and our driveway just to the right of the sign.
From I-93 in Lincoln, NH, in the summer (May to mid-November), drive across the Kancamagus Highway (Rt. 112) for approximately 24 miles. Then, turn left onto Bear Notch Road (this road is closed in the winter!). Follow Bear Notch Rd. until you reach the blinking light in Bartlett's center. Turn right at the light onto Rt. 302 East. Follow the directions above from Glen. This route offers great scenery and avoids traffic in North Conway. In the winter, come across on the Kancamagus Highway (Rt. 112) until you reach Conway at the intersection of Rt. 16. Follow the directions below and bypass North Conway's shopping district. Please note that traffic delays may occur due to the numerous name-brand outlets in the area.
To bypass the Shopping District from the South on Rt. 16, take a left onto Washington St. at the first set of traffic lights in Conway. After 1/2 mile, bear left at the fork onto West Side Rd. Follow this road until it ends at a stop sign, then turn right onto River Road. When you reach the stop lights, continue straight through. At the stop sign in front of John Fuller school, turn right. At the next stop sign, turn left onto Mechanic Street. Finally, at the following stop sign, turn left onto Kearsarge Street. Now, follow the directions above from North Conway Village.
If you're traveling by air, the approximate travel times are as follows:
- Portland, ME: 1.5 hours
- Manchester, NH: 2.5 hours
- Boston, MA: 3 hours
